Therapist Profile - Paul Hoare

Paul Hoare is a qualified counsellor, with a Masters of Counselling and expertise working with individuals and couples across a broad range of issues.

Prior to working in private practice, Paul worked as a school counsellor, led group therapy programs for indigenous, homeless, and orphan communities, and provided volunteer counselling in Australia and the Philippines for 7 years. Paul’s eclectic counselling experience has prepared him to provide quality counselling for a wide range of presenting concerns, including depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, addictions, anger management, and relationship issues.

Paul aims to integrate multiple therapeutic approaches to maximise the benefit to his clients. Although the treatment approach may vary depending on the presenting concerns, it typically involves a combination of Systemic, Cognitive and Schematic approaches. The systemic approach focuses on facilitating lifestyle changes and self-care strategies to place the client in a healthier mindset that is more conducive to therapy. Paul then aims to help clients to understand how their thoughts and feelings are related to their underlying emotional needs, drawing from Cognitive and Compassion-Focused Therapy approaches. Finally, Paul helps his clients to identify harmful coping styles, and replace them with more helpful long-term management strategies. In his work with couples, Paul also draws from Emotion Focused Therapy and Gottman approaches.

Paul aims to assist his clients to develop a language for their experience, providing them with greater clarity and understanding of themselves and how to manage the difficulties that they may encounter in life.
