Therapist Profile - Helen Sharwood

Helen is a Registered Psychologist with over 25 years experience working with adolescents and adults in both the public and private sectors.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts, Diploma of Education, a Master of Arts (Counselling), a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling and a Graduate Diploma in Buddhist Psychology. She is a full member (MAPS) of The Australian Psychological Society.

She was a school counsellor for 18 years before moving into private practice as a psychologist.

Helen now works exclusively with adults in individual therapy where she utilises a range of therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Humanistic Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

Helen enjoys working with a broad range of clients whose clinical presentations include work-related issues, self-esteem, depressed mood, sleep problems, anxiety and panic, women’s issues, anger management, relationships and interpersonal issues, loss and grief.

She connects with her clients using a wholistic approach, offering a variety of skills for life-style well-being and social/emotional intelligence, and evidence-based mindfulness practices that are intrinsic to many current psychological therapies. Helen draws on her years as a practitioner and yoga teacher to address breathing strategies and relaxation/visualization practices for stress and anxiety.

As the therapeutic relationship develops Helen encourages her clients to develop more acceptance of self and other, understanding and a wider perspective in dealing with difficult life issues.
